Environmental Survey

The information below defines our  chosen space for our project.

Our chosen space to implement our idea is the University. We feel that this is the best environment for an installation like ours because it has varied ages and interests and a large number of students everyday. It would be a good opportunity to implement our recycling message and gain feedback.

THE UNIVERSITY

• Lines of sight
The university campus is made up of lots of different buildings, therefore always people outside and a very big campus. Can be seen from Drake's Circus. There are bins at almost every building entrance.

• Furniture, Objects and Obstructions
There are a lot of buildings, trees, seating areas, traffic and people around. In particular there are a lot of recycling bins - making this the perfect environment to install our creation!

• Doorways
Each building has its own doorway, and easy access to all parts of the university.

• Utilities (power, network, water)
Power supplies in all buildings in most rooms and all have access to the internet and wi-fi, particularly the SU and the Library. Water and drinks machines and cafe's in most buildings.

• Sources of light
Each building has lots of windows and glass doors so a lot of natural light coming through - lights in all rooms also. Our project will be based outside where there are lamp posts during the evening and natural sun light during the day.

• Any other info. that you think relevant

Lots of seating areas, buildings, walkways, bins, vehicles - obstructions.
Lots of new or foreign students and IT and Design studied here - lots of groups would be interested in the interaction.

HARSH CONDITIONS

There is a lot of noise around the space from traffic. However this would not affect our installation a great deal. We would have to ensure that our speaker was loud enough for people to hear.

Due to the traffic there is a lot of engine fumes and possibilities of smoke.

Being a city centre, there are various liquids surrounding the space. The University - student life, pubs, beer etc. Along with these liquids, it is plymouth and rain is certain.

Security is everywhere in Plymouth city centre - police, security in Drake's Circus, in the car parks, at the train station, on the university campus and certain areas at the Barbican and Hoe.

But on the upside - no carpet fudge.

None of the above conditions should be a major problem for the installation to be successfully installed as it will only require a small amount of equipment which can easily be secured and covered to protect any damage. None of the above should interfere with out initial idea.

It is a very busy space with varied interests but main age group late teens - early twenties.
