The concept design

The first years within the groups were tasked with coming up with an initial idea on how to use the boardgame with the technologies and skill sets we have. They knew that they wanted to use motion tracking, so after some brainstorming and refinement we came up with the idea of tracking movement throughout Plymouth, using North Cross roundabout as a location, and the literal game play mechanic of 'Hungry Hippos'. Below is a mock up of how we wished it to look.

Each tunnel leads to a specific type of location in Plymouth, either shops, home, university, or work. The people's movement would be tracked, and using augmented reality, they would be overlapped with a marble from the game. Once they reached a tunnel, a video would play of the motion of the hippo, and 1 would be added to the counter for that location. Therefore the piece would be a visualistion of peoples movement throughout Plymouth.

However, there were a number of problems with this idea. The first being the fact that we would need to place a camera directly above the roundabout, at a height which wasn't practical. But secondly, the idea itself was weak. We decided to drop it, but this left us at square one.
